MAHA, Macquarie Ancient History Association,
was founded in 1978 with the aim of promoting the study of Ancient History
in schools, universities and the general community. This covers many
diverse areas of the ancient world around the Mediterranean.
MAHA provides opportunities for people interested
in Ancient History to hear and/or read about recent research, and to exchange
ideas and information through a program of lectures and seminars, as well
as newsletters and other publications.
The funds raised by the Association through membership subscriptions and other activities are used in three main ways:
To assist Macquarie University students to take part in archaeological
excavations overseas as part of their program of study
To support the Association’s program of publishing, particularly the main
publication, the journal Ancient History:
Resources for Teachers (formerly Ancient Society: Resources for Teachers) which appears twice a year
To purchase items for the Museum of Ancient Cultures at Macquarie University
MAHA arranges a variety of activities throughout the year. These include:
Lectures and seminars by visiting and local scholars
Ancient History Study Days for Higher School Certificate (HSC) students
Greek Drama Festival for schools
Workshops and weekend seminars
Excursions and museum visits
Film nights and theatre parties
Other social functions
Members receive a regular Newsletter which keeps them informed
of forthcoming events and other relevant news. They may also subscribe
at a reduced rate to MAHA publications, such as the journal Ancient
History: Resources for Teachers. Members are eligible to stand
for election to the MAHA Committee, or to seek co-option to it.
