DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

Dr Ian Plant (Macquarie University) and Professor Kevin Lee (University of Sydney), together with Professor Sam Lieu (Macquarie University), were successful in 2000 in securing a National Teaching Development Grant from CUTSD (Committee for University Teaching and Staff Development, a part of the Department of Employment, Education and Training). The grant is for a total of nearly $150,000 for the planned two years of the Project (due to be completed in the middle of 2002).

The title of the project to be funded by the grant is:

Teaching Ancient Greek and Latin: Designing, Developing and Implementing New Teaching

and Learning Strategies for Latin and Ancient Greek in Australian Universities

The project aims to address the educational needs of the Classics discipline in a modern university. It will bring together current initiatives in the development of information technology tools for Classical languages at Macquarie University (and elsewhere), and in the investigation of Classical language acquisition at the Classical Languages Acquisition Research Unit (CLARU), Sydney University.

The project team includes widespread representation and appropriate expertise to ensure this project has national significance and leads to significant system-wide change.

MAJOR AIMS OF THE PROJECT

to undertake a major review of the curriculum offered in all departments teaching Classics in Australian universities and the outcomes desire

to set in place a mechanism by which there can be an easy exchange of current information and ideas related to change in the curriculum

to design new teaching and learning strategies which make sound use of new electronic tools to meet the agreed curriculum needs.

to review institutional, teaching, learning and assessment demands, and to establish if possible a consensus on achievable outcomes and benchmarks
