Areas of Research
The Academic research interests of staff, in which postgraduate study can be undertaken at Macquarie University, cover a wide range of research fields in the ancient Near East, Archaeology, Biblical studies, Egyptology, Epigraphy, Greek, Hellenistic and Roman history and society, early Christianity and Jewish studies, Coptic studies, Late Antiquity, early Middle Ages, Byzantine studies, Central Asian/Silk Roads studies, historiography, numismatics and Papyrology.

Higher Degree Research
The Department offers supervision in the research degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the areas of research listed above.
Candidates proceed primarily by thesis, which should not exceed 50,000 words for MPhil or 100,000 words for PhD. PhD candidates are also required to complete the Division of Humanities commencement program in their first year of enrolment, including a presentation of a work-in-progress session, and to attend the departmental HDR seminar in their first and second years of enrolment.
