Coursework Degrees

There are seven Coursework MA degrees offered in the Department of Ancient History:

Normally one-semester units are deemed to have 4 cr pts. Candidates must gain 32 credit points to complete the requirements for an MA. 24 credit points for a Diploma and 12 credit points for a Certificate.

Master of Arts in Ancient History

This program provides a concentrated study in Ancient History in several areas of special interest, e.g. archaeology, biblical studies, Greek and Roman history, and includes the opportunity for training in the use of documentary evidence for the study of the ancient world. The course may be completed by either coursework units or, exceptionally, coursework and minor research project.

Admission requirements:
Bachelor degree.

Length of candidature:
1 year full-time, 2-4 years part-time.

By Coursework Units

Candidates must complete eight half-year units (32 pg cr pts). Units may also be chosen from the Master of Arts in Egyptology, Coptic Studies and from the Master of Arts in Early Christian and Jewish Studies programs.

By Units and Minor Research Project

Although open to all qualified candidates this program is recommended for candidates who may wish to qualify for entry to a research program leading to either the Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy in Ancient History.

Candidates must complete six half-year units (24 pg cr pts) which must include at least one of AHPG800, AHPG801, AHPG847 or AHPG870, unless equivalent units have been taken for the Bachelor of Arts degree, and AHPG883 and AHPG884 Ancient History Minor Research Project A and B (4 pg cr pts each).

Postgraduate Diploma in Ancient History

The Diploma will provide a concentrated study in Ancient History in several areas of specialisation including archaeology, biblical studies, Coptic Studies, Egyptian, Greek and Roman history. It will also provide the opportunity for technical training in the use of documentary evidence for the study of the ancient world.

Admission requirements:
Bachelor degree.

Length of candidature:
1 year full-time, 2-3 years part-time.

Commencement:
February and July intakes.

Master of Arts in Egyptology

The program provides concentrated study in Egyptology including technical and research training for those without prior qualifications in Egyptology who may wish to qualify for entry to a research degree in Egyptology. Candidates must complete eight half-year units (32 pg cr pts) which must include AHPG860, AHPG870 and AHPG874 unless an equivalent unit has been taken for the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Admission requirements:
Bachelor degree. Relevant professional experience in the field of Egyptology may satisfy entry requirements under Rule2 (3) for the Degree of Master of Arts.

2-4 years part time.

By Coursework Units

Candidates must complete eight half-year units (32 pg cr pts) which must include AHPG860, AHPG870 and AHPG874 unless an equivalent unit has been taken for the Bachelor of Arts degree.

By Units and Minor Research Project

This program is recommended for candidates who have completed at least two undergraduate units in Egyptology and who may wish to qualify for entry to either the Master of Philosopy or the Doctor of Philosophy programs in Egyptology. The normal path to these research degrees is via the completion of the Master of Arts (in Egyptology) by eight half-year units followed by a postgraduate qualifying program to consist of AHPG883 and AHPG884 Ancient History Minor Research Project A and B.

Candidates must complete six half-year units (24 pg cr pts) including AHPG870, unless an equivalent unit has been taken for the Bachelor of Arts degree, and AHPG883 and AHPG884 Ancient History Minor Research Project A and B in an area of Egyptology.

Master of Arts in Early Christian and Jewish Studies
Postgraduate Diploma in Early Christian and Jewish Studies

Candidates with degree qualifications in other fields may be admitted to the program after completing a qualifying program (ECJS892/898) which will normally consist of one or more undergraduate (AHST) units in Ancient History. Other evidence of academic and professional attainments (e.g. in Theology) may also satisfy entry requirements under Rule 2 (3) for the Master of Arts.

2-4 years part-time.

External candidature:
Available to part-time candidates.

Course Structure

Candidates for the Diploma must complete six units (24 pg cr pts), and candidates for the MA must complete eight units (32 pg cr pts).

Although there are no formal language requirements for the programs, candidates for the MA who do not already have proficiency in either Greek or Hebrew are encouraged to take either AHPG800 Historical Documents in Greek or AHPG847 Introduction toBiblical Hebrew. There are no language requirements for the Diploma.

Candidates may transfer between the Diploma and the MA subject to approval and to the completion of the appropriate requirements.

Masters by Coursework and Minor Research Project

Although open to all qualified candidates, this program is recommended for those who may wish to qualify for entry to the Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy programs in the field. In that case two of the eight units are replaced by ECJS883 and ECJS881 Minor Research Project A and B.

Master of Arts in Coptic Studies

This program provides concentrated study in Coptic Studies, including technical and research training, for those without prior qualifications in this area who may wish to qualify for entry to a research degree in the subject.

Master of Arts in Ancient Art and Architecture

The degree will introduce students to the art and architecture of the ancient world. The program will focus upon the visual record of the ancient Egyptians, Copts, Greece and Rome, Christian and Byzantine and also include units offered through Museum Studies to introduce students to practical issues associated with the curatorship of cultural objects. No language component included.

Master of Arts in Late Antiquity

The MA in Late Antiquity provides students with a unique speciality in an exciting area of study in ancient history. It provides a focussed methodological approach to understanding the transition from the classical world to the medieval and Byzantine worlds which in turn form the basis for the emergence of modern Europe and western society. Students undertaking the degree will be encouraged to consider further study in the area of Late antiquity.

Postgraduate Certificate in Research Preparation

Many students complete a coursework degree without including a dissertation, and subsequently wish to undertake a Higher Degree by Research. This course is designed to allow students to upgrade their qualifications so that they will be eligible to apply for admission to HDR candidature in the Division of Humanities. The aim of the course is to provide supporting knowledge for and research training and experience in conducting independent research, leading to the completion of a minor dissertation: Ancient History Minor Research Project A and B (4 cr pts each) (15.000-20.000 words). Also required is a unit in an ancient language (4 cr pts).

Four-year Bachelor degree or Master degree by coursework.
