Doctor of Philosophy

Admission requirements:
Bachelor degree with first-class or second-class honours division 1 or a Masters degree with substantial research component.

Length of candidature:
2-4 years full-time, 4-8 years part-time. External candidature may be available in special circumstances.

Length of thesis:
Not exceeding 100,000 words.

Other requirements:
PhD candidates are required to complete:

the Division of Humanities Commencement Program in their first year of enrolment, which includes a presentation of a work-in-progress session

AHPG895 Advanced Topics in ancient History, a departmental seminar generally taken in the first two years of candidature, which includes presentations at the annual Ancient History Postgraduate Mini-Conference

AHPG900 Advanced Thesis Writers Seminar, which involves one thesis-based seminar presentation during the final six months of candidature.

Ancient History and Egyptology candidates are expected to have appropriate language qualifications (ancient and modern) and/or include in their programs suitable language units from those offered at Macquarie University or at other universities (e.g. the University of Sydney or the University of New England, which offers language units by external study).

A thesis in Egyptology requires prior completion of a program of eight half-year units from the MA in Egyptology or their equivalent, including AHPG882 Ancient History Minor Research Project or equivalent. If the MA does not include AHPG882 Ancient History Minor Research Project or equivalent the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Preparation is also required.

Master of Philosophy

Admission requirements:
Bachelor degree with first-class or second-class honours division 1
or
MA with merit grades and including a research project weighted at 25% of the program (see Postgraduate Programs - Coursework degrees)
or
MA together with a Postgraduate Certificate in Research Preparation

Length of thesis:
Not exceeding 50,000 words

1-3 years full-time, 2-5 years part-time. External candidature may be available in special circumstances
