Undergraduate Programs
This information lists the Ancient History units on offer and gives a brief outline of the content of each unit; students should ask the lecturer in charge or the Departmental Administative officer: (02) 9850 8833 or email: ahist@hmn.mq.edu.au for more details about particular units. Students should note that not all units are on offer in any given year and that some of the units can be taken at either 200 or 300 level. In the case of these units, the 200 and 300 level students will share tutorials and lectures, but have different assessment exercises and/or examinations. Ancient History units have the unit code prefix: AHST. Full details of availability and prerequisites are set out in the Schedule of Units in the University's Handbook of Undergraduate Studies.

AHST units at 100 level are worth 3 credit points each (requiring about 12 hours work per week, including lectures and tutorial); AHST units at 200 and 300 level are usually worth 4 credit points each (requiring about 16 hours work per week). The Diploma in Ancient Languages, is open to students eligible for admission to a degree program at Macquarie or another approved institution. The Certificate in Ancient Languages has no admission criteria. Both awards are HECS-based. Transfer is possible from the Certificate to the Diploma, and from the Diploma to a Degree. The languages offered are: Ancient Greek, Latin, Egyptian Hieroglyphs, Coptic, Akkadian and Classical Hebrew.

BA (Honours) in Ancient History
The BA degree provides basic training. The objectives of the honours program are to enhance students' understanding of history and historiography, to provide them with the opportunity to undertake supervised research in a chosen area and to improve their academic qualifications. The honours degree is valuable for entry into careers for which some demonstrable research capacity is an advantage, for admission to academic professions after postgraduate research, and for almost any occupation involving working without close supervision. Ancient History graduates may be found, for example, working in museums, libraries, personnel and management consultancy, on the floor of the Stock Exchange and in the Public Service.
The BA (Hons) program in Ancient History is a one-year program
(or two years part-time) entered upon after completion of the
BA or BA/DipEd program. A seminar from Modern
History may be included by arrangement. All students complete
a unit in historiography and two seminar unit, and write a
20,000-word thesis. Normally for a thesis in Ancient History,
the student is expected to have completed an appropriate ancient
language unit (Greek, Latin, Egyptian Hieroglyphs, Coptic,
Akkadian or Classical Hebrew) from the Undergraduate Schedule.
